Description

The Heuchera FYRE WING™ Series represents a significant breakthrough as the world's first lace-leaf heuchera collection, featuring seven distinct varieties. Heuchera FYRE WING™ 'Hematite’s deeply cut, Japanese maple-like leaves come in a dramatic cordovan red highlighted by copper tips. This exceptional perennial thrives effortlessly: it is highly cold hardy, remains naturally compact without any structural pruning, and is low maintenance. Its small stature allows it to easily tuck into tight garden borders, beds or mixed decorative containers.

Plant Care

Water

'Hematite' prefers well draining soil and to dry out between waterings. So before grabbing the hose or watering can, do the 2” test. Simply stick your finger 2” down into the soil. If it’s still moist, hold on watering until it dries down. If it’s dry, you can water.

Fertilizer

This plant doesn’t need very much fertilizer. Simply apply one annual application of a balanced slow-release fertilizer in the spring, paired with a simple top-dressing of organic compost.

Pruning

Because ‘Hematite’ naturally grows as a tight, compact mound, you never need to cut it back to control its size or shape. However, this plant will benefit from a quick Spring clean up to maintain the plant’s health and appearance. With clean shears, simply trim tattered foliage in early spring to stimulate fresh growth.

Seasons of Interest

Finely divided, Japanese maple-like foliage emerges in a rich, saturated cordovan red. This is the ideal window for a quick spring tidy, effortlessly snipping away any weathered leaves from the previous year to let the fresh, copper-tipped growth shine.

In May and June, delicate white-to-pale-yellow flower stems gracefully rise above the foliage mound. The plant naturally maintains its tight, compact shape throughout the summer heat without stretching or requiring any structural pruning.

The deep red and copper tones intensify in color rather than fading out. The low-growing mound stays clean and structurally pristine, serving as a low-maintenance, worry-free feature that anchors late-season containers, beds and borders.

Exceptionally cold hardy, this tough variety remains evergreen to semi-evergreen through the frost. Fine hairs on the lace-like leaves beautifully catch morning frost and dew, keeping your winter landscape interesting.
